Democrats and Republicans are seeing a dramatic escalation in the rhetoric and actions taken in the Cold Civil war or Cultural Civil war.
While both sides have had individuals make dangerous statements and then tried to play them down it seems to matter very little as each side accuses the other of being the most egregious.
As many people have claimed a second Civil War is crazy or impossible we now see politicians making direct threats and states starting to line up against each other.
