This is the first ever footage of a meteorite falling through its dark flight stage.
Skydiver Anders Helstrup, filmed the encounter unknowingly, only to see the falling debris on video later.
He took his footage to the University of Oslo to be analyzed.
“It has never happened before that a meteorite has been filmed during dark flight; this is the first time in world history,” said geologist Hans Amundsen.
During this phase, the meteorite “no longer travels at an angle, but falls straight down.”
Amundsen was very skeptical about it’s nature, it can’t be anything else: “The shape is typical of meteorites—a fresh fracture surface on one side, while the other side is rounded, ….the meteorite had been part of a larger stone that had exploded perhaps 20 kilometres above Helstrup.”
You can see the meteorite at the 0:22 mark.
