Who Is Santa Claus? He’s Actually A Magic Mushroom

HigherPerspectives | The Rundown Live

The story of Santa Claus is one we all know. He’s a tubby, bearded, jolly fellow who lives at the North Pole. That right there seems like a stretch as I don’t know how anyone living at the North Pole could possibly be jolly, but I guess that’s beside the point. Santa watches over all the little boys and girls, keeping a list of who is good and who isn’t, then dolling out toys to everyone, pretty much regardless of who was or wasn’t good. But where did this story come from?

According to one theory, he came from the minds of people tripping their faces off on mushrooms. Shamans in arctic tribes used to give out magic mushrooms on the winter solstice in Siberian and Arctic areas.

“As the story goes, up until a few hundred years ago, these practicing shamans or priests connected to the older traditions would collect Amanita muscaria (the Holy Mushroom), dry them and then give them as gifts on the winter solstice,” John Rush, an anthropologist at Sierra College in Rocklin, California told LiveScience in an email. “Because snow is usually blocking doors, there was an opening in the roof through which people entered and exited, thus the chimney story.”

Another interesting coincidence is the fact that mushrooms, like the Amanita muscaria, are found below Christmas trees, which is where we place gifts. It’s almost like the Shamans were telling us that magic mushrooms are a gift…

The flying Reindeer tie into it all too. Reindeer, which are common in Siberia, often seek our these mushrooms and trip on them as well. So Siberian tribesmen and women who found themselves tripping in late December with their reindeer companions thought perhaps the reindeer may have been able to fly.

There are other signs too. Shamans often dressed in red suits with white spots like Santa did and Rudolf’s red nose slightly resembles the red head of an amanita mushroom. And perhaps the greatest coincidence of them all: Santa also lives in the Arctic. It sounds like this is one piece of lore that stems from our friend the psychedelic mushroom.
