Exactly how hot are hot Jupiters? Try about 3300 fahrenheit! Researchers are studying this and other crazy weather patterns on exoplanets!
Exoplanet Weather Report: Windy, With Clouds of Rubies and Sapphires
“For the first time, scientists have glimpsed the weather on a planet beyond the solar system and discovered its clouds are likely made from the same material that forms rubies and sapphires.”
This Giant Planet Is So Huge It Makes Its Sun Spin Faster
“An international team of astronomers led by Kaloyan Penev of Princeton University recently discovered a hot Jupiter exoplanet that seems to be speeding up the rotation of its host star. The planet, called HATS-18b, is about 2,100 light-years away, and it is massive enough and close enough to its parent star to influence the star’s rotation with its gravity.”
Liftoff of the Kepler spacecraft
“The Delta II rocket carrying NASA’s Kepler spacecraft lifted off March 6, 2009 from Launch Complex 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Launch occurred at 7:49 p.m. PST, sending the agency’s first planet-hunting spacecraft on a three-and-a-half-year mission to seek signs of other Earth-like planets.”
