“In a new study, a team of researchers led by Dr. Luis Barreiro from the University of Montreal, Canada, and Dr. Jenny Tung from Duke University further investigated the link between social status and the immune system in rhesus monkeys at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta.”

“The lower a person is on the social ladder – as measured by income, education and other markers of relative status – the higher the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, psychiatric disorders and a host of other illnesses. One recent study based on income data from 1.4 billion tax records found that people in the top 1 percent income bracket had life expectancies that were as much as 10 to 15 years longer than those in the bottom 1 percent.”

“Despite big advances in medicine, technology and education, the longevity gap between high-income and low-income Americans has been widening sharply.The poor are losing ground not only in income, but also in years of life, the most basic measure of well-being. In the early 1970s, a 60-year-old man in the top half of the earnings ladder could expect to live 1.2 years longer than a man of the same age in the bottom half, according to an analysis by the Social Security Administration. Fast-forward to 2001, and he could expect to live 5.8 years longer than his poorer counterpart.”
