A social media trend has local police departments across the nation worried. Now concerns over what is being dubbed “the purge hoax”  after the Hollywood movie has hit Northeast Wisconsin. The movies plot is based around a 24 hour period in which people can cause crimes without consequences.

Now, internet pictures have been posted on social networking sites claiming the purge is coming to 5 cities in Wisconsin. Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton, Fond du Lac and Green Bay.

Some local residents are taking the movie meme seriously.

One is Kimberly Scholtz of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

“I warned my friends and family I was like you never know who’s out there, who’s going to take it literally,” Scholtz told NBC 26.

The local Appleton Police Department are taking the photo shopped banners seriously as well. On Monday the Green Bay, Appleton and Fond du Lac police departments collaborated to investigate the postings.

“We’re aware and that we’re working with other agencies around the state just to make sure we’re on top of any issues that might arise,” said Sergeant David Lund with the Appleton Police Department.

“It’s a ridiculous idea that people can take a fictional plot and play that out in communities around the country,” said Sgt. Lund.

“I don’t want to have them think it’s just a hoax and then something does happen and they could have prevented it,” said Scholtz.

The picture posted originated in Louisville, Kentucky created by a teenager.
