Police Hand out Lottery Tickets to Speeders

Approximately 30 motorists pulled over for speeding and other traffic related violations on Christmas in Melbourne, Florida, were actually greeted with a strange surprise, scratch-off lottery tickets, courtesy of the police.

The idea was to issue a warning to speeders, but also, some positive public relations, ensuring law the enforcement interaction was a positive one.

“There have been some mixed reactions to it naturally, but we are not rewarding bad driving behavior, we are doing what we normally do. We are stopping it, trying to get the point across and making it memorable by surprising people with something other than a traffic ticket.” Sgt. Sheridan Shelley of the Melbourne Police Department told ABC News.
