A recent NASA study on lunar dust may have found the reason behind the moon’s strange glow, and it’s not what scientists expected.
Static Electricity May Transport Dust Across Airless Planetary Bodies
“A NASA-funded research team, led by Mihaly Horanyi at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU-Boulder), has conducted laboratory experiments to bring closure to a long-standing issue of electrostatic dust transport, explaining a variety of unusual phenomena on the surfaces of airless planetary bodies, including observations from the Apollo era to the recent Rosetta comet mission.”
The Moon Is Probably Older Than We Thought – and Life Could Be Too
“The moon is older than previously thought, pushing back the clock for when conditions on Earth were suitable for life, research published on Wednesday shows. A new analysis of zircon fragments trapped in rock samples retrieved by the Apollo 14 astronauts shows that the moon is 4.51 billion years old, meaning it formed within 60 million years of the birth of the solar system.”
The Mystery Of Moon Dust
“When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin returned from the moon, their cargo included nearly fifty pounds of rock and soil, which were packed in an aluminum box with seals designed to maintain the lunar surface’s low-pressure environment. But back at Johnson Space Center, in Houston, scientists discovered that the seals had been destroyed-by moon dust.”
