A group of some half dozen residents carrying automatic rifles and sidearms patrolled a street in Ferguson, Missouri, early Tuesday. This came one day after businesses and property had been damaged by looters during protests that were originally meant to honor Michael Brown, an unarmed teen fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson last year. The armed men identified themselves as part of a group called “Oath Keepers,” – an organization of current and former U.S. soldiers and police who aim to protect the U.S. Constitution.
While some recognized why the group was out patrolling the streets, others called their presence as being “unnecessary and inflammatory.”
“You and people who look like you white men, have the sovereignty to take advantage of the second amendment and walk around with assault rifles, but we can’t even stand out here and assemble peacefully and exercise our constitutional right to do so without being gassed, maced, and arrested. What is your perspective on this?” a protester said.
One of the Oath Keepers maintained that they were simply there to help keep the peace.
“Like I said, everybody is entitled to their opinion but they are not entitled to make up their own facts and then to agitate and then try to bring about confusion and harm to property and people. Today we’re just protecting people, that’s all.”
Monday’s protests proved to be less chaotic than the prior evening’s, with only nine people ultimately getting arrested following skirmishes with police.
