Do you agree with Snowden?
On Wednesday, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul took to the floor of the US Senate and spoke for 10-and-a-half hours concerning the government abuses permitted under the Patriot Act and the NSA’s bulk data collection.
Paul argued that the Patriot Act should be repealed by saying, “I will not let the Patriot Act, the most unpatriotic of acts, go unchallenged. At the very least, we should debate. We should debate whether or not we are going to relinquish our rights, or whether or not we are going to have a full and able debate over whether or not we can live within the Constitution, or whether or not we have to go around the Constitution.”
The Republican presidential candidate also stated that the NSA’s program of collecting data on Americans should be ended by President Obama immediately by executive order.
NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden acknowledged Rand’s stand in a Reddit AMA on Thursday. The exiled American also urged Reddit participants to call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office in an effort to kill the bill. You can read the Snowden’s full comment below.
“It represents a sea change from a few years ago, when intrusive new surveillance laws were passed without any kind of meaningful opposition or debate. Whatever you think about Rand Paul or his politics, it’s important to remember that when he took the floor to say “No” to any length of reauthorization of the Patriot Act, he was speaking for the majority of Americans — more than 60% of whom want to see this kind of mass surveillance reformed or ended.
He was joined by several other senators who disagree with the Senate Majority leader’s efforts to sneak through a reauthorization of what courts just weeks ago declared was a comprehensively unlawful program, and if you notice that yours did not take to the floor with him, you should call them right now (1-920-END-4-215) and ask them to vote against any extension of the Patriot Act, because the final vote is being forced during the dark of a holiday weekend to shield them from criticism.”
Congress is scheduled to vote on the renewal of the Patriot Act before three critical sections expire on June, 1.
